Gong Yoo has shared some behind-the-scenes insights from the filming of 'Squid Game' Season 2.
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet actor Gong Yoo at a café in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul. Following his role in the Netflix series 'Trunk,' Gong Yoo is set to appear in 'Squid Game' Season 2, which premieres on October 26.
'Squid Game' Season 2 continues the intense story of Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), who returns to the deadly games seeking revenge, and his confrontation with the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun), as the real game begins anew.
Gong Yoo made a special appearance in 'Squid Game' Season 1 as the mysterious man recruiting participants for the games, leaving a strong impression despite his brief role.
In Season 2, Gong Yoo returns. He expressed his curiosity and anticipation, saying, "I haven't seen the final version of Season 2 yet. They don't show it to me because I'm just a special guest."
Despite being a special guest, Gong Yoo stated, "I have no desire to be a regular cast member, believe it or not. The important thing is that it was a lot of fun. Many have asked if I wanted a leading or bigger role, but I was content with my part." He added, "During Season 1, the director gave me a single A4 sheet. It was a character I hadn't played before, and without detailed explanations, it allowed my imagination to run wild, which was fun," he said with a childlike expression.
Gong Yoo continued, "The project became a phenomenon, and somehow I ended up joining Season 2. Acting was enjoyable," he hinted, "This time, it wasn't just an A4 sheet." He also shared, "I felt a catharsis and joy that I hadn't experienced before while acting. Since my character isn't intricately linked with others, I could act more freely and creatively, which was fun and enjoyable."
Gong Yoo also shared some sweaty behind-the-scenes moments. He recalled, "I think it was near Tapgol Park. The temperature felt like it was 38-39 degrees Celsius. As soon as I stepped out of the makeup van, I was drenched in sweat. There was a bit of acting involved in the outdoor shoot. That day, not just me, but everyone had the makeup team wiping us down, only for the sweat to pour again."
Gong Yoo joked, "I don't even know the rest of the story. Netflix, they're relentless. They won't tell me," bringing laughter.
'Squid Game' Season 2 will be available on Netflix starting October 26.
